Ichabod Crane is a multi-part, mixed materials laser-cut kit. All wooden parts can be fixed with superglue or PVA (except where marked otherwise, when freedom of movement is needed). Plastic parts are designed to be left unglued (for use as hinge sleeves). Resin gears should be glued to their relevant decks BUT NOT to one another if a moveable cab is required. Cable/chain should only be glued to final anchors.
Cut main legs from 3mm sheet and assemble around 3mm X-frame.
Ensure engraved side of X-frame faces towards floor and that all four legs sit snugly.
Assemble second X-frame centred on underside of deck - engraved side on both pieces face outwards from one another.
Check deck plate for dry fit - DO NOT glue in place at this point.
Fit deck rails to engraved lines on deck plate.
Apply 1.5mm leg details in sequence - designed for overlap.
Fix deck plate in position to ensure legs and frames sit square. Mount lower gear (resin casting) onto deck plate.
Fix girders to underside of cab deck in line with engraved details. Make sure to leave central circle clear; ,mount and fix upper deck gear.
Assemble cab with panel engraving facing outwards.
Mount and fix assembled cab on upper surface of cab deck; fix boom supports between deck and cab.
Cut one length of dowel to dry fit as boom front hinge; dry fit upper and lower gears (DO NOT glue if you require moveable cab). Cut plastic pipe to size to act as outside hinge, leaving cocktail stick overlong.
Assemble and fix rear boom and hinge (cocktail stick). Fit door and window frames, glue door in position (open or closed).
Fit cab frames to hide corner junctions. Assemble main boom arm and fit to front hinge, cutting cocktail stick to size AFTER checking for fit through boom arm. Thread cocktail hinge through sized length of plastic pipe.
Fix safety railings to upper edge of leg & deck assembly.
Assemble and fix hoop ladder to match opening in railings.
Fit cable/chain looped over and around front and rear hinge assemblies. Leave loose ends of cable to run through hole in rear base of cab.
Assemble roof frame on flat surface.
Fix roof to curved side of frame, making sure to use engraved markings to align roof centrally and square to the frame. Glue to centre line first and allow to set thoroughly before proceeding to next step.
With roof securely glued to centreline, progressively bend and fix roof into position, one side, one rib at a time. Leave alone to set thoroughly.
Fix loose ends of cable to spare lengths of cocktail stick INSIDE cab to act as anchor.
Dried roof assembly can be fixed in place or left loose per your preference.
Prime finished model with Halfords spray primer or similar before painting as normal.
Textured spray paints or similar can be used to help hide wood grain.
